Native habitats, the plants, insects, animals, and rocks that are unique to a particular place, are the subject of this artwork. This includes old growth forests and land where little or no development has occurred. Many of the plant species represented are endangered or threatened. Recent prints depict the varied habitats of Central and South Florida, swamps, forests, marshes, prairies, scrubs, and pinelands. The prints begin with on-site sketches. A dominant theme is the drama of the moment, a personal interaction with a particular place. The work represents natural forms and processed accurately and expressively, going beyond documentation. The woodcut medium and the carving process suit this expressive depiction. The carved marks have texture and rhythm. While a planned sketch is transferred to the wood, the carving demands a "high dosage" of spontaneity, letting go, and following the movement or feeling for the form. |
